World vs World: The Basics

This item is outdated but still useful. It may be missing minor information about newer game features or situational changes. It remains here because it may still be useful, but should not be relied upon.

Leveling in WvW can be very rewarding, It's been tested and proven with both my level 80 characters. I leveled my warrior to 80 in WvW in about 90ish hours by taking sentries, camps, towers, and keeps. They offer ample amounts of experience, even more so when you get on a good run with a zerg (a group of people usually always led by a commander). In WvW three servers compete against each other for points. In WvW all players are upped and all stats are adjusted to level 80. You can get items for killing everything, the level of the items you collect is reflected by which level you are outside of WvW. So if you're level 27, you will get level 27 items.

The Maps

There is a total of four maps in WvW. Three of the maps are identical and are designated one for each server, and one map called Eternal battle grounds which is usually a three way war. All players can access any map they wish whenever they want, however, new players must unlock the waypoints at all three of the other Borderlands by traveling to them through the portals. The portals are located and can be accessed near the main waypoint in ET. Each map has a jumping puzzle and several farming areas. All ores, wood, and plants can also be gathered on all four maps.

The Commanders

A commander is a person with a blue tag above their name that leads a group of people to take objectives like camps/towers/keeps. You can find a commander on a map by looking for blue icon, if there's a commander at any location you can usually bet there is a group of people with him/her and that's where you need to be. To become a commander you must pay 100 gold.

Badges

Badges can be obtained by killing other players from the other servers, or by killing keep lords and camp supervisors. Badges are use as currency for Armors/Weapons, siege, and are also needed for crafting a legendary weapon.

Siege

Siege is used to do massive damage to walls, gates, and players. There is 6 types of siege which can be bought and placed by any player, you cannot trade siege weapons. Keep in mind when using siege engines to hit walls/gates that if you don't see numbers when the intended target is hit, you are not hitting it. They take supplies to build.

  1. Flame Ram: Used to bust down gates, they also have a skill that enables the operator to shoot flames out through the sides of the ram to do condition damage to players. These require 40 supplies to build.
  2. Arrow Carts: Used as both an offensive and defensive aoe weapon, these shoot a barrage of arrows down upon the enemies. There is 3 different options available to the operator that enables him to either do regular damage, Cripple them, or cause bleeding. They are often placed on walls of towers and keeps, however when placing them be sure they are out of range from enemy aoe's. These require 30 supplies to build.
  3. Ballista: Used to do massive ranged damage against Players, oil, cannons, and siege weapons. When placing them on a wall be sure you place them on the ledge rather than behind, or I will be blocked and useless. They have 3 options for operator being a regular attack used mostly for attacking players, a burst attack that does damage to players all around one target, and an attack mainly used for attacking anything not human (Gates, Oil, Cannons, Siege). These have pierce damage, meaning they travel through players and hit other players. These require 30 supplies to build
  4. Catapult: These bad boys are ranged siege used to take out walls/doors, interrupt enemies, and take out other siege. They are very effective when defending a tower/keep by placing them behind the gate and shooting it, this interrupts and damages the ram and users on the other side of the gate trying to get in. These have 2 options for attacking, the first being a regular boulder used for damaging walls and gates, and the second being throwing gravel effective against enemy zergs. These cost 50 supplies to build.
  5. Trebs: Extremely long range siege weapons, equivalent to artillery. The higher they are the further the projectile travels. They are used to counter other trebs and siege, bust down walls/gates, and they have the option to throw poisonous cows which cause condition damage. These take 100 supplies to build.
  6. Siege Golems: These are walking siege, and can attack players but isn't recommended because of how squishy they really are. They do not do damage to walls, only to gates. They have several options that can be used by the operator. They can do regular attack (most recommended for attacking gates), a whirl attack used for doing Aoe damage to players, a pull used to pull players or NPC's towards the golem, and a shield bubble used to keep out projectiles. Siege golems are slow moving and usually require a Mesmer to move them via portals. They take damage by falling, so avoid any form of cliff jumping. They can also swim. these require 100 supplies to build.

Sentries, Camps, Towers, and Keeps

  1. Sentry: Stationary NPC guards located all over the map. They own a control point and can be took by any server team. The control point can be claimed after the NPC guard is dead, and takes roughly 5-10 seconds. Once took, a new NPC will spawn, and will represent the server team that took it last.
  2. Camps (5 Points): Located in several areas on each map that produce supplies every so often that Dolyaks transport supplies to the respected towers/keeps. A team from any server can take the camp by killing the NPC's inside, and holding the position for 5-10 seconds. New NPC's will spawn and the camp will turn the color of the server who took it. Once taken the players can take supply by running up and pressing F where the cargo is located. Each player can hold up to 10 supply, and can be seen at the top/center screen beside the barrel. If a guild has a buff activated and claims the camp players can collect and hold 15 supply from that location only. Once a camp is taken and the NPC's are spawned, the supervisor of the camp will get a buff for roughly 4-5 minutes that enables it not to be killed, and does major damage. So avoid retaking a camp that has been freshly flipped. Camps can be upgraded as well.
  3. Towers (10 Points): Towers have 2 walls and 1 gate that can be damaged. Never take supply from a tower unless the commander says. The supplies in the tower are delivered by a dolyak from a supply camp that is owned by the same team. The supplies are then used to either upgrade the tower, or build defenses. The NPC worker inside of the tower uses the tower supplies to upgrade walls, gates, build oil/cannons/mortars, hire merchants/worker. Each tower has a Lord, and once the walls/gates are breached and the lord is killed, again the team has to hold it for 5-10 seconds to capture it.
  4. Keeps (15 Points): Keeps have an outer and an inner, meaning there is two sets of walls/gates to get through before you get to the lords room and capture it. Keeps have several walls/gates that can be damaged on all sides. Again never take supplies unless the commander says. Supplies in a keep are delivered by a dolyak from a supply camp that is owned by the same team. It has identical upgrades to the tower with the exception of armor repairs. Once the walls/gates are breached and the lord is killed, again the team has to hold it for 5-10 seconds to capture it.

This guide is still in progress.
