The World vs World Map

Choosing the right armor for your character is an important part of World vs World team play. The vendor located in the Citadel (starting area) of our WvW borderland zone is a great place to find armor suitable for WvW. While you can find exotic armor elsewhere (e.g., drops from PvE, crafted by other players, purchased with karma from other vendors, etc) with the same stats as those of most of the armor sets sold by the WvW vendor, the WvW vendor will sell you exotic armor with these stats at a fraction of the cost (from 80 silver to 1 gold and 130 to 200 Badges of Honor each).

Important Notes on Armor Attributes

  • The stats of two of the armor sets below (Invaders and Rabid) do not appear on any armor that can be crafted by players and can only be purchased from vendors in the game.

  • Generally, Berkserker's armor (power + precision + critical damage) does not work well in World vs World because it grants no toughness or vitality, and you may find that you are taken out of the fight quickly when taking on more than one opponent. This is especially true when two medium-to-large sized groups encounter one another. It's important to remain alive long enough to contribute to the fight, and the right armor can go a long way toward achieving that goal. If your build relies on having a large amount of critical damage and/or a high chance of landing a critical strike, consider using the Knight's armor (toughness + power + precision) instead.

  • Vitality is a finite resource similar to power on the offensive side. They both give an indication of how "defensive" (vitality) or "offensive" (power) your current build is, and are unaffected by other stats directly (i.e., 20,000 hit points means that you will take 20,000 damage before you are downed, regardless of how that damage is applied).

  • Toughness and healing power are analogous to precision and critical damage in that their usefulness is pretty closely tied to one another, and are both only as useful as the base stat (vitality) allows them to be. Toughness enhances your vitality pool (hit points) by reducing the amount of damage that you take. Healing power, like critical damage, is beneficial only when it's triggered, and makes very little difference in small quantities. However, it can be build-defining in large quantities.

  • Boons (buffs) and boon duration are analogous to condition damage and condition duration. Neither are diluted or enhanced by other stats, but both may be removed before the full effect has been realized (i.e., an enemy mesmer's Null Field will strip you of all boons, while a friendly mesmer's Null Field will strip you of all conditions).

  • Mobility (endurance, leaps, speed buffs, stealth, teleporting, blinking, etc) can take the place of any of the defensive stats, but requires extremely tight game-play and will be very unforgiving of any mistakes if it's your sole emphasis.

  • Condition damage is unaffected by toughness, so it's a bad idea to ignore your vitality and/or healing power, especially with the current meta leaning toward heavy condition builds.

Runes and Gemstones

Choose the right runes and/or gemstones for your armor carefully. They should compliment your character's build and fill any gaps in your armor's stats. When in doubt, orbs (for use in armor) and exquisite jewels (for use in trinkets) often cost very little on the Trading Post and you can experiment with them.

Trinkets

Like runes and gemstones, you should use trinkets (amulets, rings, back items, and accessories) to enhance your character's stats and fill any gaps. Trinkets can be purchased from various vendors throughout the game, on the Trading Post, and from other players (they are crafted by jewelers). The WvW armor vendor will also sell you trinkets with soldier stats (power + toughness + vitality), and these trinkets are found on the Invaders Armor tab.

Tips

  • Choose the best armor for your current build from one or more of the six sets available to you. Note that all armor below requires that your character be level 80. If your character is not level 80, the armor below is still an excellent guide, and you should be able to find armor with similar stats on the Trading Post.

  • To experiment with armor, rune, and gemstone stats before you buy your armor, please see the PvE Gear Calculator (spreadsheet). You can create multiple copies of it (one for each armor set) and compare the final results to determine which armor works best with your character's build.

Available Armor

Note that you may transmute this armor if you do not like its appearance and only wish to apply its stats to another piece of armor. Transmutation Crystals may be purchased from the Gem Store or acquired as rare drops from Black Lion Chests.
